Pune, 27th November 2024: Leo, the beloved crime-fighting Labrador of the Pune Police crime branch, passed away after a brief illness, leaving a legacy of eight years of dedicated service. The police force bid an emotional farewell to the canine hero in a solemn ceremony, honoring his contribution to combating drug-related crimes in the city.

Born in July 2016, Leo joined the Pune Police dog squad at just four months old. He underwent rigorous training at a specialized dog training center, where he was skillfully prepared in drug detection and various operational drills. Following his training, Leo became a vital part of the anti-narcotics squad of the Pune Police crime branch, serving with unwavering commitment.

During his career, Leo played a pivotal role in several high-profile operations. In one significant case, he helped seize 70 kg of ganja cultivated in a field in Loni Kalbhor on Solapur Road. In another, he was instrumental in recovering a stash of marijuana and mephedrone from a Nigerian smuggler in 2019, leading to the seizure of 50 kg of marijuana within the limits of the Kondhwa police station.

Leo’s skills extended beyond operations; he was a regular participant in drug inspections at Pune railway station, bus depots, and Yerwada jail, ensuring public spaces remained drug-free. His exceptional sense of smell and discipline made him a standout performer, often surpassing his counterparts in the dog squad.

In addition to his law enforcement duties, Leo frequently participated in school programs and army events, captivating audiences with his sharp skills and demeanor.

Leo’s passing marks the end of an era for the Pune Police, who have lost not just a highly trained officer but also a cherished companion. The crime branch and the wider police force paid their respects, reflecting on his remarkable service to the city.
