“Action has been taken against the rooftop hotels and they have been ordered to tax them three times. I will review this next week. If the Property Tax Department employees do not take action, they will be suspended,” said municipal commissioner Vikram Kumar.

A huge fire broke out in a rooftop hotel on a building in Baner, luckily there were no casualties reported. But due to this, the issue of security in this hotel has come to the fore. After that, the Municipal Commissioner issued a circular and the Inspectors of the Property Tax Department took action against the rooftop hotels along with the front margin, and side margin hotels within their limits. They were ordered to collect it by taxing them three times.

Even though there are hundreds of such hotels in the city, the Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) has so far imposed a triple tax on only four to five hotels. The Peth inspectors have detailed information about changes in the use of property, unauthorised sheds, and hotels within their limits. But no notice has been issued to the rooftop hotel by these inspectors yet.

Senior officials of the department are killing time by telling them, “We will see and take action immediately”.

Meanwhile, an officer also said that action is being taken as most of the rooftop hotels in the city are occupied by former councillors, relatives of other public representatives and political office bearers.
