Pune, 16th October 2023: Maharashtra School Education Minister Deepak Kesarkar announced an impending proposal to amalgamate 12th-grade marks and State Common Entrance Test (CET) scores for admissions into professional courses. This announcement came after a state-level educational meeting where Kesarkar interacted with reporters.

The Minister informed that he will soon hold a meeting with Higher and Technical Education Minister Chandrakant Patil to discuss the details. He has instructed School Education Department Secretary Ranjitsinh Deol and Education Commissioner Suraj Mandhare to draft the proposal for the same.

In a move to modernize educational settings, Kesarkar said that technology would play a pivotal role. To curb absenteeism in classrooms, primarily due to private tutoring, face recognition technology is being considered. The Ministry is testing the installation of cameras for this purpose.

“The adoption of this system will also lessen the administrative work currently handled by teachers,” said Kesarkar.

The state government has decided to reinstate students who fail the fifth and eighth-grade exams in the same class starting this year. “If they fail the re-examination, they will remain in the same class,” confirmed Kesarkar.

Addressing the prevalence of private coaching classes associated with junior colleges, Kesarkar suggested that tutors should instead start their junior colleges. “If they apply for permission, it will be granted,” he assured.

Kesarkar emphasized that the education department would not tolerate corruption. He revealed that 33 officials are currently under investigation for various corruption charges. “These officials will be given ‘side postings,’ and strict action will be taken against them,” warned Kesarkar.
