Pune: Rahatani Resident Loses Rs 1 Crore in Investment Scam, Wakad Police Investigating

Rahatani, 6th May 2024: Driven by the promise of a 10 to 20% daily return on investments, an IT engineer fell victim to a scam and around Rs 1 Crore in Pimpri Chinchwad. The accused in this case initiated contact with the IT engineer via a WhatsApp call, providing various instructions that the engineer dutifully followed, only to be duped of a hefty sum. This online incident occurred in Rahatani from 22nd April 2024 to 30th April 2024.

A 45-year-old IT engineer from Rahatani has filed a complaint with the Wakad Police Station. The Wakad Police have registered a case against an unknown person.

According to police reports, the complainant received a WhatsApp call from an unknown phone number. The person on the call claimed to be from Motilal Oswal Financial Services Limited and promised the complainant returns of 10 to 20% if he invested with them. The accused sent the complainant a link and instructed him to install an application. The complainant was then asked for money by the accused. Hoping for returns, the complainant conducted around 15 transactions before realizing he had been duped of Rs 99,00,017 and promptly reported the incident to the police.

Regarding this, the Wakad Police have registered a case against the unknown accused under IPC Sections 406 (criminal breach of trust), 419 (punishment for cheating by personation), and 420 (cheating and dishonestly inducing delivery of property), along with relevant sections of the Information Technology Act of 2000. Assistant Police Inspector PR Shikalgar from the Wakad Police Station is further investigating this matter.
