Pune Records Highest May Temperature in 11 Years on Sunday as Heatwave Intensifies
Pune, 11th May 2026: Pune recorded its hottest May day in more than a decade on Sunday, with the Shivajinagar weather station registering a maximum temperature of 41.4°C, as the city continued to remain under the grip of intense summer heat.
The temperature surpassed the previous May high of 41.3°C recorded in 2019 and also exceeded last year’s highest May temperature of 41.2°C. Among Pune’s monitoring stations, however, Lohegaon remained the hottest this season after recording 42.7°C on May 10.
The heatwave-like conditions extended into Monday morning as Pune also recorded its highest minimum temperature of the season. The Shivajinagar observatory registered 24.8°C, around 2.5 degrees higher than Sunday’s minimum temperature, making for a warmer and more uncomfortable start to the day.
Several parts of the city witnessed a sharp rise in minimum temperatures. Hadapsar recorded 28.7°C, up from 26.3°C a day earlier, while Magarpatta saw the mercury rise to 28.2°C. Wadgaonsheri registered 27.9°C against 25.8°C on Sunday, while Chinchwad recorded 27°C. Pashan was comparatively cooler at 17.2°C.
Weather officials attributed the rising temperatures to dry and hot winds sweeping across Madhya Maharashtra. Northerly winds from Rajasthan and Gujarat are moving towards the leeward side of the Western Ghats, intensifying heat conditions in the region. Neighbouring districts including Ahilyanagar, Nashik, Sangli and Solapur also recorded temperatures above 40°C, while Jalgaon was the hottest in the region at 44.5°C.
According to IMD data, Pune’s maximum temperatures have remained above the normal May average of 37.3°C for the past several days. The city has also not received any rainfall so far this month against the normal average rainfall of 19.8 mm for May.
The weather department has predicted that dry and hot conditions are likely to continue through the week, with Pune expected to record temperatures close to 42°C over the next few days. Light rainfall activity is likely only early next week.
