Pune, 2nd January 2026: After staying at or below 10°C for most of the winter, Pune saw a noticeable rise in its minimum temperature on Friday, January 2. According to the India Meteorological Department (IMD), the city recorded a minimum of 13.5°C, an increase of nearly three degrees in 24 hours. On January 1, the minimum temperature had been 10.9°C.

Despite this temporary rise, cold conditions are expected to continue through the month. The IMD’s extended range forecast indicates that night temperatures in January will remain below normal across large parts of Maharashtra, including Pune.

Anupam Kashyapi, former head of the Weather and Forecasting Division at IMD Pune, said the current increase is likely short-lived. “The extended range forecast suggests below-normal night temperatures over Maharashtra and Madhya Pradesh until the end of January. A sharper drop in night temperatures is expected during the second week of January (January 9–15) across Maharashtra, Madhya Pradesh, Odisha, and West Bengal, with cold wave conditions likely in parts of Vidarbha, Madhya Pradesh, Chhattisgarh, West Bengal, Jharkhand, and Odisha,” he said.

Kashyapi also noted that daytime temperatures are expected to remain three to four degrees below normal until mid-January across Maharashtra, Madhya Pradesh, and Telangana.
