Pune: Relief in Sight for Ravet, Kiwale as MSEDCL Plans Four New Substations to Tackle Recurring Power Cuts
Pune, 24th July 2026: After years of complaints over recurring power outages, residents of Ravet and Kiwale may finally see some relief. The Maharashtra State Electricity Distribution Company Ltd (MSEDCL) plans to set up four new substations in the fast-growing localities after the monsoon to strengthen the power distribution network and reduce prolonged outages.
A senior MSEDCL official said the two areas and adjoining localities are currently served by only two substations catering to more than 70,000 consumers, covering a population of over 2.8 lakh. Rapid urbanisation and a surge in new housing projects have put the existing infrastructure under severe strain.
The utility plans to begin work after the monsoon, as civil works cannot be undertaken during heavy rain. It has also sought the Pimpri Chinchwad Municipal Corporation’s (PCMC) assistance in expediting permissions required for laying incoming power lines to the proposed substations.
The decision comes after heavy rain earlier this month triggered prolonged power outages across Ravet, Kiwale and Mamurdi, leaving several housing societies without electricity for up to three days. The disruptions forced residents to depend on diesel generators, disrupted work-from-home schedules and sparked protests outside the MSEDCL office in Ravet, where locals demanded stronger power infrastructure and faster restoration of supply.
According to officials, flooding had submerged several electrical installations, forcing preventive shutdowns in some locations, while technical faults triggered outages elsewhere.
Officials said the existing substations were adequate when the population was much smaller, but the rapid expansion of Ravet and Kiwale has significantly increased electricity demand, making it difficult to maintain uninterrupted supply or provide backfeed during emergencies. The proposed substations are expected to improve the resilience of the network as the two suburbs continue to witness rapid residential growth.
