Pune: Renowned Cardiologist Dr. Manuel Durairaj passes away

Pune, 11th April 2024: Dr. Manuel Durairaj, world renowned cardiologist and Founder – Chairman of the Marian Cardiac Centre and Research Foundation in Pune passed away after prolonged illness on the 11th of April 2024 . He was 84.

Dr. Durairaj was an exceptional clinician, researcher, and teacher, earning an international reputation in the field of Cardiology. Over the course of his distinguished career, Dr. Durairaj served in the Army Medical Corp and retired with the rank of Lieutenant Colonel. Dr Durairaj a Gold Medalist at Armed Forces Medical College completed his DM Cardiology in 1974 at CMC Vellore and was instrumental in starting the DM Cardiology programme in Poona University when he was Head of Cardiology at MH(CTC), Lullanagar. He founded the Marian Cardiac Centre and Research Foundation at East Street, Pune in 1988, and was Professor and first Chairman of the Academic Department of Cardiology at the Grant Medical Foundation in Pune. He was the President of the Indian College of Cardiology. He was also the Honorary Physician to two Presidents of India including President Giani Zail Singh. His work in the field of cardiology has been revolutionary and he has been instrumental in saving countless lives and setting new standards in the field.

Dr. Durairaj’s commitment extended beyond the confines of the hospital and academia. He was deeply involved in the treatment and care of thousands of patients not only in Pune but all over India and Globally. Many patients from the Middle East, United States, West Indies, West Africa and other countries have benefited from his unsurpassed clinical acumen and accurate diagnosis and brilliant medical care. Religious leaders of various congregations flocked to Dr M Durairaj for his care and affection. His selfless service was a reflection of his faith and his belief in the power of healing and caring for those devoted to spiritual life. Even into his 80s, Dr. Durairaj continued his medical practice, demonstrating an unwavering commitment to his patients, many of whom would visit him at his home on his birthday and during holidays to express their gratitude and respect.

Dr Manoj Durairaj, noted Heart Transplant Surgeon and Director of Marian Cardiac Centre said that Professor Durairaj was a brilliant academician, an astute clinician, a teacher par excellence, a devoted husband and loving father and grandfather.

Dr Durairaj is survived by his wife Mrs Valsamma, children Mrs Manju Durairaj Schwister, Son Dr Manoj Durairaj, Son in Law Mr Eric Schwister, Daugher in Law Mrs Sheena Durairaj and grandchildren Joseph-Durai, James and Maria.

The Church service will be held on April 12 at 430 pm at St. Patrick’s Cathedral Pune, Prince of Wales Drive followed by Internment at Sepulchre Cemetery, Hadapsar.
