Pune, 23rd June 2023: Pune native Kaustubh Sandeep Joshi has gained recognition for his groundbreaking research on a robot designed to locate pearls in the deep sea. The significance of his work was highlighted during Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s recent visit to the United States.

Joshi had the opportunity to present his research at the National Science Foundation (NSF) in the presence of PM Modi and Jill Biden, wife of US President Joe Biden. The Indian Embassy had contacted Joshi earlier, seeking information about his research project and PhD subject, which led to his selection for this prestigious event.

Joshi’s robot has multiple applications beyond pearl-finding, including oyster farming and aquaculture. The presentation took place at the NSF, where Joshi and American student Nova showcased their respective research. Modi personally interacted with Joshi and acknowledged the importance of his work. The American media also took notice of Joshi’s research, emphasizing its potential for joint collaboration between India and the US.

Currently pursuing his PhD in Underwater Robotics at the University of Maryland, College Park, Washington DC, Joshi completed his B-Tech from IIT Chennai and his schooling from Shamarao Kalmadi High School. Kaustubh Joshi prepared for IIT JEE at Prime Academy Pune. His innovative robot addresses the high cost and risks associated with deep-sea pearl diving. Capable of diving up to 150 meters, the robot utilizes artificial intelligence and machine learning technologies, providing real-time monitoring through a dedicated app. With a battery life of approximately seven hours, the robot can perform the work of around 100 fishermen. Its applications extend beyond pearl-finding, making it valuable for oyster farming and aquaculture.

Reflecting on his experience, Joshi expressed gratitude for the opportunity to showcase his research in front of PM Modi. Despite the initial pressure, Joshi’s confidence grew as Modi arrived, enabling him to deliver his presentation with ease. He expressed his joy in knowing that both India and America will benefit from his research.

Following the presentation, many individuals expressed interest in Joshi’s robot and closely inquired about his research. Joshi was particularly delighted by the personal interaction with Modi, who shook his hand and smiled, affirming the significance of his work.

In reflecting on his journey of IIT JEE preparation at Prime Academy Pune, Kaustubh Joshi said, “Preparing for the JEE not only helped me understand complex concepts but also taught me important life skills. I learned how to deal with tough situations and make good decisions. Studying at Prime Academy all day, I learned from both my mistakes and those of my classmates. Being around other motivated students kept me on my toes and created healthy competition, which played a big role in my success. I am indebted to Prime Academy and consider myself really lucky to get such excellent mentors.”

“We take immense pride in sharing the journey of Kaustubh Joshi, Prime Academy Pune’s 2016 batch student. Starting as a diligent student at Prime, he put in relentless hard work, conquered the challenging JEE, and graduated from IIT Madras. Today, we brim with pride as he stood on the grand international stage representing Indian students in the US, rubbing shoulders with PM Modi and First Lady Jill Biden. This accomplishment is a testament to his determination and perseverance, truly inspiring for us all”, said Lalit Kumar, Founder of Prime Academy Pune.
