Pune Residents Brace for Further Weather Swings This Winter Season
Pune, 12th December 2024: Residents across Maharashtra are witnessing stark contrasts in minimum temperatures, with sharp fluctuations being recorded due to rapidly changing weather patterns. While northern parts of the state, such as Jalgaon and Nashik, have been experiencing biting cold, southern regions are relatively warmer.
In Jalgaon, the temperature dipped to a chilly 8°C on Tuesday but rose to 10.2°C by Wednesday. Nashik saw a similar trend, with its temperature climbing from 9.4°C on Tuesday to 10.4°C on Wednesday. Residents of Dab village in Akkalkuwa tehsil, Nandurbar district, reported frost-like formations on cars — a rare phenomenon for the region.
Pune itself has witnessed a rollercoaster of temperatures. Shivajinagar, for instance, recorded 9.5°C on November 29, but temperatures soared to 22.5°C by December 4, before dropping again to 12°C on December 9. Meanwhile, Niphad recorded its season’s lowest at 7°C.
Experts attribute these erratic patterns to atmospheric conditions and geographical factors.
SD Sanap, a scientist at the India Meteorological Department (IMD) in Pune, forecasted an increase in minimum temperatures after December 13-14 due to the dominance of easterly winds. “The rise will be gradual, around 2-3°C, and not as sharp as earlier when minimums exceeded 20°C in Pune,” he said. Sanap added that temperatures are likely to dip again later this month as clear skies and northerly winds return.
Northern Maharashtra has been particularly affected by the dominance of cold, dry winds, while central and southern Maharashtra still experience some influence from easterly winds. “As we move further north, minimum temperatures naturally tend to drop during winter,” Sanap remarked.
The IMD has advised citizens to prepare for further dips in temperatures as the weather remains dynamic. With cold winds likely to return, northern Maharashtra may once again feel the chill in the coming weeks.
