Fursungi, 22nd August 2026: Residents of Fursungi and Uruli Devachi have opposed the Pune Municipal Corporation’s decision to set up a new 500-metric-tonne waste processing plant at the existing waste depot, alleging that the move violates a 2017 directive issued by then Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis to stop setting up new waste processing projects at the site and gradually shut the depot.

The residents and the Citizens’ Action Committee have been protesting at the Fursungi-Uruli Devachi waste depot for the past 20 days against the proposed project. Representatives of various political parties have also visited the protest site and extended their support to the residents.

Residents questioned the PMC’s decision to set up another plant at the same location despite the availability of more than 2,000 acres of government or grazing land around Pune. They asked why the civic body was insisting on expanding waste processing facilities only in Fursungi-Uruli Devachi.

PMC officials have maintained that measures will be taken to ensure that the new plant does not cause inconvenience to local residents.

The tender for the 500-metric-tonne project has reportedly been approved and a work order has also been issued. The Fursungi-Uruli Devachi municipal council has passed a resolution opposing the new waste processing plant and submitted it to the PMC.

Residents had also staged a protest before the Maharashtra Pollution Control Board (MPCB), alleging that norms were not being followed at the existing waste depot. MPCB officials subsequently inspected the site and are expected to submit a report within a week.

The residents have said their agitation will continue until the work order for the proposed plant is cancelled. They have also maintained that they have not stopped garbage vehicles during the ongoing protest, despite claims of large quantities of garbage accumulating in Pune city.
