Pune, 20th August 2026: The Maharashtra government has granted administrative approval to a revised project cost of ₹10,502.36 crore for the expansion of the Pune Ring Road, in a major infrastructure push aimed at reducing traffic congestion in Pune and diverting inter-city and inter-state traffic away from the city.

The decision was taken during a cabinet meeting chaired by Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis at Mantralaya. The Maharashtra State Road Development Corporation (MSRDC) will be responsible for implementing the project.

As part of the expansion, a 31.805-km access-controlled expressway will be constructed between Sortapwadi (Walti) on the Pune-Solapur Road and Varve Budruk-Shivare on the Pune-Satara Road.

The complete Pune Ring Road project will span approximately 168.981 km. Once fully connected, it is expected to operate as an integrated access-controlled corridor, allowing inter-city and inter-state traffic to bypass Pune and reducing pressure on the city’s existing road network.

Around 80% of the required land acquisition has reportedly been completed, while the government has set a target of June 2029 for completion of the project.

The proposed corridor will have three lanes in each direction, with a maximum speed limit of 120 kmph. The project will also feature one interchange, three major bridges, five minor bridges, 18 viaducts and four tunnels.

The plan further includes tree plantation along both sides of the road and landscaping near interchanges.

The Ring Road is expected to improve connectivity between major highways around Pune while diverting through-traffic away from the city. If completed as planned and effectively integrated with the existing road network, the project could provide significant relief from congestion on several major routes.

The state government has also approved the ₹17,724.99-crore Metro Line 13 project, which will connect Mira-Bhayandar with Vasai-Virar through parts of Thane and Palghar districts.
