Kharadi Chowk, 12th June 2025: In a dramatic and dangerous incident at Kharadi Bypass Chowk on the Pune-Nagar Highway, a 22-year-old man allegedly drove nearly one kilometre with another driver clinging to the bonnet of his car following a road accident on Tuesday. The victim, 40-year-old Navnath Kasar, was rescued by a traffic police constable who stopped the speeding vehicle after hearing cries for help.

The accused, a resident of Pimpri Sandas near Shikrapur, has been detained and booked under relevant sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) for rash driving and endangering human life.

Constable Hailed for Quick Action

“I was managing traffic at Viman Nagar Chowk when I heard someone shouting for help. I saw a man on the bonnet of a moving car and immediately signalled the driver to stop. Thankfully, I managed to halt the vehicle and pull the man to safety,” said Constable Sachin Chavan, who later filed a complaint at the Airport Police Station.

Incident Triggered by Minor Collision

According to the FIR, Kasar had arrived at Kharadi Bypass Chowk after dropping off a passenger who had boarded from Hinjawadi IT Park. While he was proceeding towards Pune city, his cab was struck from behind by another car.

Kasar stepped out to confront the driver of the second vehicle, but instead of stopping, the young driver allegedly accelerated toward him. “He tried to run me over. In panic, I jumped onto the bonnet to avoid being crushed. But he kept driving, dragging me for almost a kilometre,” Kasar told police.

Vehicle Seized, No Passengers at the Time

Senior Police Inspector Ajay Sankeshwari confirmed the vehicle involved has been seized. “Fortunately, there were no passengers in either car at the time of the incident. Kasar managed to hold on to the wipers and a portion of the bonnet until help arrived,” he said.

The police have launched a deeper investigation into the incident. No prior criminal record has been found against the accused, but officials are reviewing CCTV footage and checking for substance use or other possible motives.

Further legal action will follow based on forensic analysis and witness statements.
