Pune, 10th March 2025: In a scathing attack, Rohini Khadse, Maharashtra President of the women’s wing of the Nationalist Congress Party-Sharadchandra Pawar (NCP-SP), targeted Rupali Chakankar, chairperson of the Maharashtra Women’s Commission, over the handling of women’s safety issues in the state.

Khadse criticized Chakankar, stating, “The only job of the chairperson of the Women’s Commission is to attend party events with good makeup; they do not belong to any party but are more concerned with appearances.” Khadse’s remarks came during a protest in Pune against rising cases of violence against women, where she questioned why police do not take swift action against perpetrators and why victims often have to endure prolonged delays in justice.

Khadse highlighted the deteriorating law and order situation in Pune, once known as the cultural capital and educational hub of Maharashtra, now becoming a hub of violence and crime. She pointed out that crimes such as car accidents, gang violence, daylight shootings, chain snatching, rape, and murder have increased significantly. Khadse also criticized Maharashtra Chief Minister and Home Minister Devendra Fadnavis for failing to control the police administration effectively, leading to a rise in criminal activities.

Furthermore, Khadse emphasized the need for the implementation of the Shakti Act, which was passed during the previous government but has been stalled for over three and a half years. She questioned why this law, designed to curb crimes against women, has not been enforced yet.
