Pune, 11th September 2022: Rotary International is a 117-year-old non-government organization active in social welfare in over 200 countries. Founded by Paul Harris in 1905, Rotary now has over 35,000 clubs across the globe, with more than 1.2 million members. In India alone, Rotary has more than 3,700 clubs with 1,40,000+ members.

Rotary became well-known for its active participation in the drive for Polio Eradication for the whole world. The seven focus areas of Rotary are International Peace, Health, Water Management, Mother and Child Health, Basic Education, Socio-Economic Development, and Environment.

The young generation is looked up to as future leaders for International Peace. To help them better understand the world’s social issues and socialization, children up to the age of 18, from various countries in the world, are sent to families in each other’s countries for three months or one year. In Rotary terminology, this is known as the “Rotary Youth Exchange” program. These students stay with two or more families in the host countries, study in local colleges, learn local languages, family, social and religious cultures, traditions, dance etc. They also participate in various projects and activities of Rotary and present them to their home clubs. This helps the local clubs gain financial support from their foreign counterparts for various projects and helps Rotary build and enhance a good public image through newspapers, TV, and the internet.

For the last several years, the Rotary Club of Pune Sinhagad Road has been participating in the immersion procession of the Kasaba Ganpati along with these RYE students carrying the flags of their countries and boards bearing the social project themes of Rotary. It is one of the attractions of the local mass media (visual & print).

The club was founded in 1999 and is a part of Rotary District 3131. Since its inception, the club has taken up and successfully completed several projects in social, education and health activities for the benefit of deprived and needy members of society. Rotary Year 2022-23 also includes several projects in the Rotary’s focus areas. Some of them include: Complete development of the village as a SMART village and making it self-sustaining, setting up water ATMs to make clean water available in Tribal (Adivasi) and drought-prone areas, creating awareness of water and waste-water management and helping increase the water table, take help of school children to minimize or reuse plastic waste for the better environment, encourage people to use recyclable material instead of plastic, provide medical support to Tribal (Adivasi) and remote areas, develop schools by setting up libraries, computer labs and providing e-learning units, conducting teachers’ training, and others.

The club has taken up several other projects in association with renowned Ganesh Mandals like Kasaba Ganapati, Tambadi Jogeshwari, Dagadusheth Halwai, and other NGOs.
