Pune: RPI (A) Demands Dr Babasaheb Ambedkar Memorial and Statue at Chandni Chowk
Pune, 17th March 2026: The Republican Party of India (Athawale) has urged the Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) to set up a memorial and a full-length statue of Dr Babasaheb Ambedkar at Chandani Chowk.
The demand was raised at a preparatory meeting held at the PMC office ahead of Ambedkar Jayanti on April 14. Umesh Kamble, a party office-bearer, who put forward the proposal, also offered to donate the statue if the civic body provides suitable land.
The meeting was attended by Mayor Manjusha Nagpure, deputy mayor Parshuram Wadekar, municipal commissioner Naval Kishor Ram, corporators, police officials and senior civic officers, along with representatives of various organisations and Ambedkarite groups.
During the meeting, participants were invited to share suggestions for the celebrations. Kamble said Chandani Chowk, considered the city’s western gateway, particularly after the merger of 23 villages into PMC limits would be a suitable location for a memorial and statue of Dr Ambedkar.
He added that his organisation, Vikas Pratishthan, is willing to provide a full-length statue if land is allotted.
