Pune, 8th March 2023: Rs 35 crore has been spent on the new Mutha right canal flowing from Khadakwasla to Indapur for preventing leakage, strengthening, and derailing. It has been claimed by the Water Resources Department that the carrying capacity of the canal has increased due to these measures.

The New Mutha Right Canal is 202 km long, from Khadakwasla to Indapur. The work of this canal was completed in 1960. This canal is 29 km long from Khadakwasla to Fursungi. The canal reaches Dhayari, Nanded, Janata Vasahat, the Cantonment area, Hadapsar, Fursungi, Lonikalbhor, Daund, and finally, Indapur.

In 2018, Mutha Right Canal burst in the Dandekar bridge area. In this background, the canal is inspected and maintained every year. 40 per cent of the water was still leaking in the urban areas of this canal. Lining and reinforcement works were started to contain this leakage. A fund of Rs 37 crore has been approved for this. Works worth Rs 35 crore have been done. Since this canal was in function for a long time, there were difficulties in its repair work.

This canal has a carrying capacity of one thousand cusecs. Due to huge encroachments along the canal, garbage and debris are continuously dumped in this canal for the last few years. Also, the filling of the canal has become loose. Similarly, due to about 40 per cent leakage of water from under the canal, less water reaches the end, i.e., Indapur.

The canal has not been repaired, lined, or reinforced for the past few years. Due to this, the canal has got cracks. As rats and rodents have made a place to live in these cracks, after releasing water from the canal for agriculture, water is flowing into this hole. Due to this, there are frequent occurrences of canals bursting with large amounts of water in case of leakage.

There is moisture in this canal as water is constantly being released from this canal for agriculture. Therefore, even if the filling work is done, due to the moisture in the lower part, this part does not dry well after the repair.

Vijay Patil, Executive Engineer of Khadakwasla Irrigation Department, said, “The works of filling the canal have been completed. Fursungi (Deshmukh Mala), as well as Khadakwasla, Dhayari, and Janata Vasahat to Shinde Vasti canal repair works, have been done. A fund of around Rs 37 crore has been sanctioned for this work, out of which works of Rs 35 crore have been completed.”
