Pune: Rs 429 Crore Lost to Cyber Frauds in Pimpri Chinchwad; 37,000 Cases Reported
Pimpri Chinchwad, 21st December 2024: Cyber Crimes have surged within the jurisdiction of the Pimpri Chinchwad Police Commissionerate (PCPC), with a staggering Rs 429 Crore duped from people and 37,000 cases reported in 2024 alone. Surprisingly, many victims are highly educated individuals.
Despite some success by the cyber police in apprehending criminals, many accused remain at large due to advancing technology and limitations in police resources. The Maharashtra Police needs to implement concrete measures to address this growing menace. However, the responsibility does not lie solely with the authorities; citizens must also exercise caution when handling their mobile devices and social media accounts.
Assistant Commissioner of Police Dr Vishal Hire emphasized the importance of vigilance, warning that even seemingly harmless links, advertisements related to share trading, or OTP-related messages could result in emptied bank accounts. “Fraud of Rs 429 crore in cybercrime is a significant issue. Both common and highly educated individuals must be cautious and proactive,” he stated.
Dr Hire also encouraged citizens to report incidents promptly or file online complaints to aid the police in combating cybercrime. He highlighted the need for public awareness, stressing that in many cases of cybercrime, the victims unknowingly invite fraudsters into their digital lives.
Given the alarming rise in cybercrimes, it is crucial for both the administration and the public to work together to reduce these incidents through vigilance, education, and timely reporting.
