Hinjawadi, 3rd April 2025: In a major step towards addressing the persistent traffic congestion in Hinjewadi’s Rajiv Gandhi Infotech Park, the Maharashtra Industrial Development Corporation (MIDC) has initiated a ₹650 crore project to develop alternative roads, including a new flyover. The process of land acquisition for these projects has already begun, and officials believe this will significantly ease traffic woes in the IT hub.

Hinjawadi IT Park has witnessed a sharp rise in vehicular movement in recent years, making the existing road network inadequate. Despite repeated concerns from commuters and IT employees, alternative routes were not developed in time, leading to daily traffic congestion, particularly at Laxmi Chowk, a known bottleneck. To tackle this issue, a four-lane, 720-meter-long flyover will be constructed at Laxmi Chowk at an estimated cost of ₹40 crore.

Key Infrastructure Developments

  1. Flyover at Laxmi Chowk
    • Length: 720 meters
    • Cost: ₹40 crore
  2. Six-Lane Road from Shivaji Chowk to Smashanbhoomi
    • Length: 900 meters
    • Cost: ₹24.74 crore
  3. New Road Connecting IT Park Phase One to Phase Three
    • Length: 5 kilometers
    • Cost: ₹584.14 crore

The six-lane road from Shivaji Chowk to Smashanbhoomi will be widened to accommodate increased traffic flow, while a new 5-km road connecting Phase One and Phase Three of the IT Park is also planned. This road is expected to play a crucial role in easing congestion and will require a significant portion of the allocated budget.

Land Acquisition and Administrative Process

The Public Works Department (PWD) was initially tasked with acquiring land for these projects before transferring it to the MIDC. However, at a recent meeting chaired by District Collector Jitendra Dudi, it was decided that the MIDC would take charge of the land acquisition directly to expedite the process. Following this decision, the MIDC’s engineering department has submitted a proposal for approval at the headquarters, after which land acquisition will begin.

“Land acquisition for these alternative roads, including the flyover, will be carried out by MIDC. The proposal has been sent for approval, and once sanctioned, work will commence as per the instructions of the District Collector,” said Archana Pathare, Regional Officer, MIDC.

Demand for Government Intervention

Stakeholders from the IT sector have welcomed the move but emphasized the need for greater government intervention. “The government needs to give priority to Hinjawadi IT Park. The Industries Minister should visit the area and inspect the actual situation. Metro alone will not solve the traffic problem—alternative roads, subways, and flyovers are necessary,” said Pawanjit Mane, President, Forum for IT Employees.

Echoing similar concerns, Gyanendra Hulsure, President of the Hinjawadi Employees and Residents Trust, added, “We have long been demanding the widening of roads in the IT Park. Expanding key routes and addressing bottlenecks will have a positive impact on traffic flow.”

Way Forward

With the MIDC taking charge of land acquisition and the approval process in its final stages, these projects are expected to commence soon. Once completed, these developments will significantly improve commuting conditions for thousands of IT professionals and residents in the region.

However, experts suggest that a long-term traffic management plan, including sustainable transport solutions, will be essential for keeping pace with future growth.
