Pune, 6th April 2026: Following the October 2024 incident in Bopdev Ghat, where a 22-year-old woman was gang-raped, the Maharashtra government has taken a major step to improve safety in and around Pune.

To strengthen security in hills, ghats, forests, riverbanks and other isolated areas, the city police, in coordination with the Maharashtra Home Department, have launched the ‘Pune CCTV Surveillance for a Safe City’ initiative.

The initiative aims to prevent crimes in remote locations and ensure quick assistance during emergencies. Under the project, nearly 1,000 AI-based high-resolution CCTV cameras have been installed at 178 locations across vulnerable areas. These cameras will help police monitor activities, deter illegal acts and enhance overall surveillance.

Officials said the project is expected to improve coordination between security agencies and strengthen safety for citizens. It will also help protect the environment, wildlife and public spaces while enabling better monitoring and law enforcement in vulnerable and less supervised areas.
