Pune, 10th September 2025: The long-pending drainage infrastructure in 16 of the 23 villages recently merged into the Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) limits is set to receive a major boost, with ₹323 crore sanctioned under the Central Government’s AMRUT (Atal Mission for Rejuvenation and Urban Transformation) scheme.

Additional Municipal Commissioner Prithviraj B.P. announced that the detailed project report (DPR) for laying drainage lines in these villages has been approved. The tendering process will be initiated shortly, he confirmed.

With these villages lacking basic civic amenities post-merger, the PMC had sought financial assistance from the Centre for essential infrastructure, including drainage systems and Sewage Treatment Plants (STPs). While funding for the drainage work has been approved, the proposal for an STP project worth approximately ₹190 crore is still pending with the government.

Under the AMRUT scheme, the project cost will be shared among the Centre, State, and PMC in a 25:25:50 ratio. “The project plan was ready, but tenders could not be floated due to a lack of funds. Now that approval has been granted, the implementation process will accelerate,” said Prithviraj.

Additionally, he noted that drainage work in the TP (Town Planning) scheme area of Mahalunge will be executed through the Pune Metropolitan Region Development Authority (PMRDA).

Meanwhile, of the 11 villages previously merged with PMC, drainage works in nine have seen significant progress, with 68% (about 180 kilometers) of the planned network completed. For areas near the Loni refinery, central approval was secured after persistent follow-up, paving the way for the remaining work to commence soon.

The 16 villages to benefit from the ₹323 crore drainage project include: Sus, Mahalunge, Kondhwe Dhawade, New Kopre, Narhe, Jambhulwadi, Kolewadi, Bhilarewadi, Gujar Nimbalkarwadi, Mangdewadi, Sansasnagar, Kirkitwadi, Nandoshi, Nanded, Khadakwasla, and Pisoli.

In a related development, PMC had also requested funds for various city projects under the 15th Finance Commission. However, due to the delay in municipal elections, the commission has withheld fund approvals, leading to a temporary halt in several planned initiatives.
