Pune: School Fire Training Pays Off as Young Heroes, Led by 13-Year-Old Kabir Shukla, Contain Woodland Society Blaze
Pune, 4th October 2025: In an extraordinary display of bravery, seven children aged 11 to 13 helped contain a fire that broke out in the electric mains of Woodland Society, Kothrud, an 11-storey residential complex housing over 100 flats. Their composure, quick thinking, and teamwork prevented what could have escalated into a major disaster.
The Incident
At around 8:30 pm, residents noticed smoke and the smell of burning plastic emanating from the ground floor. The fire was traced to the meter board, where two MCBs had already caught fire. With several other meters adjacent, the situation had the potential to escalate rapidly.
While on-duty security guards struggled to respond, the children of the building took immediate action.
Young Heroes Rise to the Occasion
The group split into two teams: one checking the ground floor, the other the first floor. Some children quickly alerted the management committee, while others raised alarms to mobilize nearby adults. Their coordinated effort ensured the fire was addressed in the crucial first minutes.
Leading the response, Kabir Shukla, a student at Sanskriti School, Bhukum campus, drew on fire safety training received at school. He confidently handled a fire extinguisher, aiming it at the base of the flames, slowing the fire long enough for a nearby milkman to assist in fully extinguishing it.
Collective Courage, Lasting Inspiration
Alongside Kabir, the following children played a critical role in containing the blaze:
Abir Joshi – Gokul Learning Center
Arpit Deshpande – Millennium School
Arika Shukla – Sanskriti School, Bhukum campus
Sai Fegde – Walnut School, Shivane
Malhar Shahane – Walnut School, Shivane
Ruchir Athlekar – New India School, Bhusari Colony
Their presence of mind, leadership, and teamwork demonstrated maturity beyond their years, qualities that are often tested only in moments of crisis.
