Pune Sees Brief Pause in Monsoon Rains; IMD Issues Fresh Alert for Ghat Regions
Pune, 23rd June 2025: After a spell of intense rainfall over the past week, Pune and its surrounding ghat areas witnessed a noticeable dip in rainfall activity on Sunday. According to the India Meteorological Department (IMD), the reduced precipitation may be short-lived, with conditions expected to intensify again by Monday.
In the past 24 hours, Tamhini Ghat recorded the highest rainfall at 91 mm, followed by Lonavala with 18 mm, reflecting the lighter showers across the Sahyadri range. Meanwhile, Pune city saw minimal rainfall with Shivajinagar receiving just 2.9 mm, Pashan 6.3 mm, and Lohgaon 2.2 mm. Rainfall in suburban areas was even lower—Chinchwad reported 1.5 mm, NDA 0.5 mm, and Koregaon Park also 0.5 mm.
Nearby regions such as Girivan (8 mm), Kurvande (5 mm), Nimgiri (3.5 mm), Bhor (2.5 mm), and Talegaon (0.5 mm) similarly reported modest rainfall figures.
An orange alert has been issued by the IMD for Pune and its neighbouring ghat areas for Monday, with expectations of heavier downpours returning. “A generally cloudy sky with intermittent rain is very likely, especially over the ghats,” said an IMD official, urging residents and trekkers to remain cautious.
The alert also extends to Raigad, Ratnagiri, and Satara districts, where conditions are ripe for increased rainfall intensity.
Despite the temporary lull, the water levels in the region’s reservoirs have continued to rise. The combined water stock of the four major dams supplying Pune—Panshet, Varasgaon, Temghar, and Khadakwasla—stood at 10.17 TMC, or about 34.87% of total capacity as of Sunday.
Rainfall over the catchment areas supported this storage rise, with Temghar receiving 40 mm, Panshet 18 mm, Varasgaon 14 mm, and Khadakwasla registering 1 mm. However, the fluctuation in rain and humidity has had unintended consequences in urban areas. Residents from multiple localities reported a surge in mosquito breeding, raising concerns over the potential spread of vector-borne illnesses.
Citizens have appealed to both Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) and Pimpri Chinchwad Municipal Corporation (PCMC) to take pre-emptive steps to curb mosquito-related issues before the situation worsens.
