Pune Sees Light Showers, IMD Predicts Thunderstorms and Gusty Winds Across Maharashtra

Pune, 18th May 2025: After a relatively more intense spell on Friday, Pune witnessed scattered light showers on Saturday, with reduced intensity. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has forecast continued pre-monsoon activity over the next few days, including thunderstorms, lightning, and gusty winds across Maharashtra.
“Parts of Maharashtra, including Pune, are currently experiencing pre-monsoon developments. These are common during the seasonal transition and typically involve short bursts of rain, thunderstorms, and strong winds,” said an IMD official on Saturday.
The IMD’s forecast for Pune on Sunday includes partly cloudy skies during the morning, becoming generally overcast in the afternoon and evening, with possible thunderstorms and winds gusting at 30-40 kmph.
According to data recorded between 8:30 am and 5:30 pm on Saturday, the National Defence Academy (NDA) area received 2 mm of rain. Rajgurunagar recorded 1.5 mm, while Magarpatta, Haveli, Daund, and Talegaon each saw 0.5 mm of rainfall.
Looking ahead, the IMD has predicted isolated to scattered rainfall activity — ranging from light to moderate intensity — accompanied by thunderstorms and gusty winds over Madhya Maharashtra, Marathwada, and Gujarat from May 17 to 23. The Konkan and Goa regions are expected to receive similar weather conditions between May 17 and 20. Wind speeds may reach 30-50 kmph in some areas, and the department has issued an alert for thundersqualls.
Meanwhile, the impact of severe weather has been more tragic in northern parts of the state. In the past week, 12 people have lost their lives in the Nashik division due to heavy rainfall, lightning, and storms. Of these, seven fatalities were caused specifically by lightning strikes, authorities confirmed.
The IMD has urged citizens, particularly farmers and those working outdoors, to stay alert and take precautions during thunderstorm activity.
