Pune, 8th June 2026: After witnessing record-breaking rainfall in May last year, Pune experienced a sharp contrast this year, with the city receiving significantly below-normal rainfall during the month. While May 2025 recorded an unprecedented 135.2 mm of rain, this year only 19 mm was recorded against the monthly average of around 40 mm.

The heavy rainfall in May 2025 had broken a 64-year-old record for the month. The city received more than three times its normal rainfall as the southwest monsoon advanced rapidly, reaching Kerala ahead of schedule and entering Maharashtra by the end of May. The combined impact of pre-monsoon and early monsoon showers had provided much-needed relief from the summer heat.

This year, however, Pune residents endured intense heat and humid conditions throughout May. Temperatures crossed the 40°C mark on several occasions, raising hopes that pre-monsoon showers would bring some respite. However, rainfall activity remained weak for most of the month.

The city received some relief on May 22 and 23, when afternoon showers lashed parts of Pune. However, the rainfall was insufficient to significantly improve the overall monthly total. Following these spells, dry weather conditions returned and temperatures continued to remain high.

Data from the past five years show that May 2021 and May 2025 recorded above-normal rainfall, while 2022, 2023, 2024 and 2026 witnessed below-normal precipitation.

Even though the southwest monsoon has entered Maharashtra, Pune is yet to receive widespread and sustained monsoon rainfall. With hot and humid weather persisting into June, residents are eagerly awaiting the arrival of consistent monsoon showers.
