Pune Sees Sharp Day-Night Temperature Swings; Health Experts Warn of Rising Illnesses

Pune, 19th March 2025: The city is experiencing significant temperature fluctuations, with daytime heat persisting while nights remain relatively cool. Meteorologists attribute this contrast to clear skies, which cause rapid heating during the day and quick cooling at night.
According to weather data, Shivajinagar recorded a high of 38.7°C during the day, while the temperature dropped to 16.7°C at night, marking a 22-degree difference. Similar trends were observed in NDA (38.6°C to 15.8°C) and Pashan (38.8°C to 17.4°C). Lohgaon also saw a significant variation of 19.1°C, with the mercury reaching 40.3°C during the day (4°C above normal) and falling to 21.2°C at night.
Experts warn that such sharp fluctuations can impact health, as the body struggles to adjust to rapid temperature shifts.
“Many patients are reporting viral infections, allergic bronchitis, cough, and cold. We are also seeing cases of severe body pain, headaches, heat-related fatigue, and even nosebleeds,” a family physician said. He explained that sudden shifts in temperature weaken the body’s immune defences, making people more vulnerable to infections.
“When the temperature fluctuates by more than 20 degrees, the respiratory system is especially at risk. Hot daytime air dries out the mucous membranes, and the cooler night air makes it easier for viruses to attack,” he added.
Across Maharashtra, Brahmapuri in Vidarbha recorded the state’s highest maximum temperature at 41.5°C, while Nashik saw the lowest minimum temperature at 15.4°C.
SD Sanap, a scientist at IMD Pune, confirmed a slight dip in night temperatures over the past day. “Compared to last week, temperatures have dropped by around 0.5 to 1 degree in some areas. However, the change is not very significant,” he said.
Sanap predicted some relief in the coming days. “We expect daytime temperatures to ease slightly due to moisture incursion from the Bay of Bengal. Partly cloudy skies from Wednesday and Thursday may bring a slight dip in maximum temperatures,” he stated. However, he cautioned that night temperatures could rise, as easterly winds are expected to bring in more moisture.
Residents are advised to stay hydrated, dress appropriately for changing temperatures, and take precautions to prevent heat-related illnesses.
