Policy for CCTV Camera Maintenance in Pune to Be Finalized Within a Month: CM Fadnavis

Pune, 19th March 2025: Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis on Tuesday assured that a structured policy for the upkeep of CCTV cameras in Pune and other cities would be introduced within a month. His statement came in response to concerns raised by Shivajinagar MLA Siddharth Shirole during the ongoing state assembly session.
“The issue of non-functional CCTV cameras needs immediate attention. A decision will be made on whether the responsibility for maintenance will lie with the police department, municipal corporation, or another agency,” said Fadnavis.
He emphasized the need for a dedicated approach to ensure these cameras operate efficiently, addressing technical glitches that have rendered many of them ineffective.
Currently, Pune has around 10,000 surveillance cameras installed by multiple agencies, including the police, civic authorities, and Metro department. However, many of these cameras are either malfunctioning or lack proper upkeep, raising security concerns.
During the discussion, MLA Shirole pointed out the confusion surrounding the management of these surveillance systems. “There is no clarity on who is responsible for maintaining these cameras, which is a major drawback in ensuring citywide security,” he said. He suggested that the police department take over the responsibility and that a structured maintenance framework be implemented.
Shirole also proposed the installation of an additional 10,000 cameras and recommended integrating artificial intelligence into surveillance systems to enhance monitoring, particularly during nighttime.
Responding to these suggestions, Minister of State for Home Affairs Yogesh Kadam assured that the government would establish standard operating procedures for CCTV installation and maintenance. “We are working towards equipping Pune with AI-enabled cameras to enhance surveillance capabilities,” he added.
