Pune Sees Surge In Dengue Cases With 12 Confirmed Patients This Month

Pune, 26th July 2023: With the onset of the monsoon season in Pune, the city has witnessed a concerning rise in dengue cases. So far this month, health authorities have identified 161 suspected patients, out of which 12 cases have been confirmed as dengue. The total number of suspected dengue cases reported this year has reached 633.

Pune Municipal Corporation’s Assistant Health Officer, Suryakant Devkar, reported that the number of dengue patients began increasing at the start of July within the municipal limits. Unfortunately, the month also marked the first reported dengue-related death in the city this year. Alongside dengue, one patient has been diagnosed with chikungunya.

To address the situation, the Municipal Health Department has been actively issuing notices to residential and commercial establishments. In July alone, 520 notices were served, resulting in a total fine collection of Rs 46,600. Throughout the year, 1,013 such notices have been issued, with a cumulative fine amounting to Rs 1,39,700.

Sassoon Hospital is witnessing an influx of suspected dengue patients, with an average of two to three admissions daily. These patients undergo NS-1 and IgM tests, and if positive, their samples are sent to the National Institute of Virology for RTPCR testing. In July, 91 samples were sent for testing, out of which 7 to 8 cases were confirmed as dengue.
