Pune Sees Surge in House Burglaries; Property Worth Rs 73.4 Crore Stolen in 3.5 Years
Pune, 9th July 2025: House burglaries are on the rise in Pune, with thieves looting properties worth a staggering ₹73.4 crore in the last three and a half years. Despite efforts by the police, detection rates remain a concern, with only 43.88% of the registered cases solved during this period.
According to police data compiled between 2022 and June 2025, 2,019 house break-in cases were registered across various police stations in the city. Of these, only 886 cases have been solved so far, and property worth ₹13.41 crore has been recovered. The remaining burglars are still at large, and stolen goods continue to remain unrecovered.
Criminals have primarily targeted closed flats across the city’s residential societies by breaking locks during the day. Burgled items include gold and silver ornaments, cash, and other valuable household assets. In 2025 alone, till the end of June, 205 burglary cases were reported, out of which only 67 have been cracked.
The highest number of house burglaries has been reported in Police Zone 5, which covers the areas of Kondhwa, Hadapsar, Bibwewadi, Wanawadi, and Undri. This belt, known for rapid suburban expansion and increasing residential density, recorded 822 cases in the last three and a half years — with just 334 solved.
Why Are Burglaries Rising?
Pune’s urban sprawl and growing migration from rural areas have led to a population boom, especially in suburbs. With many people employed in the IT and industrial sectors, long work hours and empty homes during the day have made it easier for thieves to strike. Police say that burglars often survey closed flats before breaking in, usually during daylight hours.
Police Appeal to Citizens
In light of the growing threat, Pune Police have urged residents to take precautionary measures:
Avoid keeping large amounts of valuables at home.
Inform trusted neighbors when leaving for work or travel.
Appoint verified security guards after police background checks.
Install CCTV cameras at entry and exit points in housing societies.
Maintain a visitor log and ensure entry is allowed only after proper identification.
Use strong, high-quality locks to secure doors and windows.
Police are also appealing to citizens to be more vigilant and report suspicious activity immediately. As the city continues to grow, authorities emphasize the importance of community policing and preventive infrastructure in residential neighborhoods to curb property crimes.
