Pune, 20th March 2026: Members of the Shia Muslim community in Pune have decided to observe this year’s Ramzan Eid by wearing black ribbons as a mark of protest against certain international developments, community members said.

According to community members, the decision was taken to symbolically register dissent during the Eid prayers and celebrations scheduled on March 21. Participants will wear black ribbons while offering the Eid namaz and during community gatherings, while maintaining a peaceful atmosphere.

Community leaders said the move is intended to express concern over geopolitical issues. They also stated that the gesture would mark a protest over reports related to senior Shia religious leader Ali Khamenei, who has often been seen by followers as supportive of Indian positions linked to Kashmir and Pakistan in various international discussions.

Members of the community also said the protest would highlight their opposition to the ongoing war involving Iran and its disputes with the United States and Israel.

Representatives emphasized that the protest would remain symbolic and peaceful. “The community has decided to wear black ribbons during Eid prayers and celebrations to express its concerns in a dignified and non-violent manner,” said Khisal Jafri, a member of the Shia Muslim community.

Despite the symbolic protest, Eid prayers and festivities in Pune are expected to take place as usual, with community members gathering at mosques and Eidgahs across the city to mark the end of the holy month of Ramadan.
