Pune, 8th April 2024: A student at Savitribai Phule University (SPPU) was assaulted on campus. The student claims that the attack was motivated by attempts to sever his friendship with a young woman from a different religious background. He has filed a formal complaint with the SPPU Hostel Authorities. However, as of now, no official case has been registered regarding this incident.

As per the student’s complaint, the involved individual is a student enrolled at the Skill Development Center within SPPU. The incident occurred when the student and his girlfriend were leaving the SPPU canteen. They were confronted by a group of ten to twelve individuals arriving on a two-wheeler. Claiming affiliation with a Hindutva organization, one of the individuals demanded the Aadhaar cards of both student’s and his girlfriend and inquired about their religious affiliations. Accusing the student of engaging in “love jihad,” the activists separated the young woman for counselling on the matter. Meanwhile, they threatened the student and contacted his family using the provided mobile number. “Take your son,” they instructed the boy’s father before assaulting the student.

“They threatened me and escorted me to the hostel, instructing me to pack my belongings and depart immediately,” stated the young man in his complaint to the hostel authority. He further alleged that the activists warned him against returning to the premises. Meanwhile, Prof. Dr. Suresh Gosavi, Vice-Chancellor of SPPU, assured that appropriate action will be taken following a thorough investigation into the incident.
