Sinhgad Road, 1st May 2025: Maharashtra Deputy Chief Minister and Pune Guardian Minister Ajit Pawar today inaugurated the second phase of Pune’s longest flyover on Sinhagad Road, assuring that the state government is committed to the holistic development of Pune, Pimpri-Chinchwad, and the Pune Metropolitan Region over the next five years.
The 2.2-kilometer-long bridge, constructed from Vitthalwadi Arch to Fun Time Theater, is expected to significantly ease traffic congestion in the city’s rapidly growing western suburbs, including Vadgaon, Dhayari, Narhe, Nanded, and Khadakwasla.
“This flyover is not just a transport project but a key step in the city’s regeneration,” Pawar said during the inaugural event, which was attended by Union Minister of State Muralidhar Mohol, MP Medha Kulkarni, MLA Hemant Rasane, PMC Commissioner Dr. Rajendra Bhosale, and other senior officials.
Major Relief for Daily Commuters
With the new bridge bypassing five busy junctions—Inamdar Chowk, Hingne Chowk, Santosh Hall Chowk, Dutt Hotel Chowk, and Goyal Ganga Chowk—the flyover is expected to cut travel time by nearly 30 minutes for over 1.5 lakh daily commuters. The bridge also aims to reduce air pollution by improving traffic flow.
“This is a much-needed project that Sinhagad Road residents have awaited for years,” said MoS Muralidhar Mohol. “It is a testament to the joint efforts of the state and central governments to make Pune one of the most liveable cities in India.”
Project Timeline and Features
PMC Commissioner Dr. Rajendra Bhosale noted that work on the bridge began in September 2021, during the COVID-19 pandemic, yet progressed at a commendable pace. The project was undertaken in three phases at a total cost of ₹118.37 crore.
- Phase 1: A 520-meter single-way flyover from Rajaram Bridge towards Swargate opened in August 2024.
- Phase 2: The newly opened 2.2-kilometer flyover from Vitthalwadi to Fun Time Theater.
- Phase 3: A 1.5-kilometer stretch from Indian Hume Gate (Goyal Ganga Chowk) to Inamdar Chowk to Swargate, expected to be completed by June 15, 2025.
The Phase 2 structure, built using the prestressed box girder method, includes 60 pillars and a road width of 7.3 meters.
Looking Ahead
“This flyover will greatly benefit residents from Khadakwasla, Narhe, Vadgaon, and Dhayari,” said Dr. Bhosale. “It reflects the administration’s commitment to improving commute times and quality of life in Pune.”
After cutting the ribbon, Deputy CM Ajit Pawar and other dignitaries inspected the bridge by car, marking a significant milestone in Pune’s infrastructure development journey.
