Pune: Six Arrested for Attempting to Sell 40-Day-Old Baby in Yerawada

Yerawada, 5th July 2025: A case has been registered in Pune against six individuals for attempting to sell a 40-day-old baby. All parties involved, the prospective buyers, the child’s parents, and the intermediaries, have been booked and arrested by the Yerawada Police.

The infant, barely one and a half months old, was allegedly being sold on 2nd July in the Shastri Nagar area. Police Constable Sachin Gawali reported it to the Yerawada Police Station.

Those booked in the case include the baby’s parents, Minal (30) and Onkar Sapkal (29), residents of Bibwewadi, along with Sahil Bagwan (27, resident of Wai), Reshma Avtade (34) and Sachin Avtade (44), both residents of Shastri Nagar, and Deepali Phatangare (32), resident of Ahilyanagar.

According to the police report, the Sapkals were allegedly trying to sell their infant to accused Deepali Phatangare without any legal adoption documents. Reshma, Sachin, and Sahil acted as mediators in the deal. The agreed price for the baby was reportedly Rs 3.5 lakh.

All six accused have been booked under the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) sections 143 (trafficking of a person) and 3(5) (acts done by several persons in furtherance of common intention), along with relevant sections of the Juvenile Justice (Care and Protection of Children) Act, 2015.

Senior Police Inspector Ravindra Shelke, in charge of Yerawada Police Station, is investigating the matter further.
