Pune, 4th March 2025: The scorching heat has arrived early in Pune, with Shivajinagar recording its highest temperature of the season so far at 37.7°C on Monday, according to the India Meteorological Department (IMD). The temperature was 3.3°C above normal, signaling an early onset of summer.

The situation was even more intense in Lohgaon, where the mercury soared to 39.6°C, making it not only the hottest location in Maharashtra but also registering a 5.2°C deviation from the normal temperature—the highest recorded departure in the state this season.

Statewide Temperature Rise
Apart from Pune, other cities in Maharashtra also experienced unseasonably high temperatures. Akola recorded 38.6°C (3.4°C above normal), while Bramhapuri touched 37.9°C (3.3°C above normal). Solapur was another hotspot, with temperatures reaching 38.9°C, making it the second hottest place in the state.

Even coastal areas, which typically enjoy some respite, are feeling the heat. Ratnagiri recorded 34.4°C, while Mumbai’s Santacruz station registered 35.3°C.

Heatwave Conditions Expected in Maharashtra
The IMD’s seasonal outlook for summer 2025 suggests that Maharashtra will likely experience above-normal temperatures through May, particularly in the western and central regions.

Weather models indicate that the state is at high risk of prolonged heatwaves, with several days of extreme temperatures expected. A senior IMD official noted, “Maharashtra falls in the deep red zones on the forecast maps, indicating an increased likelihood of heatwave conditions lasting longer than usual this summer.”

Nighttime Temperatures Also Climbing
Adding to the discomfort, night temperatures have also remained abnormally high. Lohegaon recorded a minimum temperature of 21.9°C, which was a staggering 7.9°C above normal.

As the summer progresses, residents are advised to take precautions, stay hydrated, and avoid prolonged exposure to the sun, especially during peak afternoon hours. The IMD continues to monitor the situation closely and will issue further advisories as needed.
