Pune: Special Campaign Against Illegal Liquor Sale And Consumption

Pune, 11th January 2023: The Pune unit of the Maharashtra State Excise Department has informed that a total of 29 crimes have been registered in the district between January 7 and 9 by conducting a special campaign against illegal liquor sellers and consumers consuming liquor in illegal places under Sections 68 and 84 of the Maharashtra Prohibition Act 1949.

After the accused who were arrested in this action were produced in the court, 25 accused were convicted and the court imposed a fine of Rs 37,000 on these accused. Earlier, a total of 35 such crimes were reported between September 2022 and December 31, 2022. A total of 71 accused have been found guilty by the court and fined Rs 1,27,800.

Apart from this, the State Excise Department has submitted a proposal to the competent authorities to collect good behavior bonds from the accused to deter the criminals along with the eradication of illegal liquor manufacturing, transportation, and sale.

Also, a total of 17 proposals for action under MPDA and two proposals under MCOCA have been given to the relevant competent authorities. A total of 10 departmental cases have been registered against the licensee of liquor shops and country liquor bars selling liquor at a higher rate.

According to the Superintendent State Excise Office, the total number of crimes reported in 2022-23 has increased by 435 over the year 2021-22. The number of arrested accused has increased by 596. The number of impounded vehicles has increased by 72 and the value of impounded goods has increased to Rs 5,86,40,662.

Charan Singh Rajput, Superintendent, State Excise Department said, “Action is being taken against those who manufacture, transport, and sell illegal liquor in the district.
