Pune: Speed Camera Installed Near Navale Bridge Goes Missing, Case Registered

Pune 25th Sept 2023: In a bizarre incident reported in the city, the speed camera installed near the Bhumkar Chowk, a few meters away from Navale Bridge to take action against overspeeding on the Mumbai-Bangalore Highway was reported stolen by unidentified people. The incident came to light after a Non Governmental Organisation (NGO) that was responsible for the maintenance of the camera found it missing from the pole where it was installed earlier this year.
According to the complainant, the speed camera and Vehicle Actuated Speed Sign (VAAS) device were installed near the Bhumkar Chowk in March this year by Save Life Foundation. The NGO was also given the responsibility to carry out maintenance of the camera and device. While carrying out maintenance of the same on September 22, the camera and device were missing from the spot where they were installed.
The speed camera was installed after a series of accidents were reported near the Navle Bridge where speeding by heavy vehicles was also blamed to be one of the reasons. The highway traffic police had started penalising vehicles that were found overspeeding at this stretch. Interestingly, the complainant has claimed that the camera has gone missing between July 28 and August 22 this year while the traffic department and NHAI officials were reportedly unaware of theft unless the NGO officials themselves reached out to lodge a complaint in the matter as there was no complaint by the highway authorities before this.
A case under relevant sections has been registered at Sinhagad Road Police Station against unidentified people. Further investigation in the matter is underway.
