Pune: Speed Limit Reduced to 30 kmph on Navale Bridge Stretch After Deadly Accident
Pune, 16th November 2025: In the wake of the recent accident at Navale bridge, Union Minister of State for Civil Aviation Muralidhar Mohol has directed authorities to immediately implement short-term safety measures to curb accidents along the stretch. He stressed that while long-term solutions are essential, urgent corrective steps must be taken without delay, with clear responsibilities assigned to each concerned department.
Mohol was addressing a review meeting held at the VVIP Rest House on Saturday. The meeting was attended by MLA Bhimrao Tapkir, Divisional Commissioner Dr Chandrakant Pulkundwar, Pune Police Commissioner Amitesh Kumar, PMC Commissioner Naval Kishore Ram, PMRDA Commissioner Dr Yogesh Mhase, Additional Police Commissioner Manoj Patil, District SP Sandeep Gill, NHAI Project Director Sanjay Kadam, Deputy Commissioner of Traffic Himmat Jadhav, RTO Archana Gaikwad, and senior officials from PWD, PMPML, and MSEDCL.
Mohol said that the DPR for the ring road from Jambhulwadi to Warje—being prepared by PMRDA—must be completed quickly. He added that the DPR for the proposed elevated corridor has been finalised and will soon be placed before the state cabinet for approval. Key works such as completing the service road and underpass between Jambhulwadi and Ravet, speeding up land acquisition, and widening the Vadgaon bridge must be prioritised, he said.
Focus on Immediate Measures
To reduce accident risks in the short term, Mohol issued a series of actionable directives:
• Increase the number of speed guns on the highway from three to six.
• Reduce the speed limit on the Navale bridge stretch from 60 kmph to 30 kmph.
• Conduct strict checks on overloaded and heavy vehicles at Khed-Shivapur toll plaza, including brakes and other technical parameters.
• Impose fines at the next toll plaza for vehicles violating rules.
• Install more road reflectors to improve visibility.
• Identify an official bus stop location on the stretch to prevent random passenger pick-ups by PMPML buses.
• Hold a District Road Safety Committee meeting to plan and monitor safety compliance.
He also stressed that PMC, PCMC and PMRDA must immediately clear encroachments along the service road and work towards easing congestion. The minister said all suggestions and actions discussed in the meeting will be reviewed in December.
MLA Bhimrao Tapkir assured complete support from local representatives to ensure road safety measures are implemented effectively.
Divisional Commissioner Dr Pulkundwar emphasised the need for a road safety audit and directed all agencies to work in coordination. Police Commissioner Amitesh Kumar said the police will intensify traffic management and carry out joint inspections of accident-prone points with local representatives.
PMC Commissioner Naval Kishore Ram stated that the civic body is actively removing encroachments and expediting service road works. PMRDA Commissioner Dr Yogesh Mhase said the ring road DPR and service road works will be accelerated.
Additional Commissioner of Police Manoj Patil also gave a detailed presentation on the immediate measures required from the police department to reduce mishaps in the area.
