Pune: Speeding Truck Kills Three, Injures Several on Kalyan-Ahmednagar Highway Near Junnar

Junnar, 19th July 2024: A tragic accident occurred in Gulunchwadi, Junnar Taluka, Pune, when a speeding truck from Ahmednagar rammed into people returning home after a funeral, killing three and seriously injuring eight to ten others. The incident took place this morning around 11:30 on the Kalyan-Ahmednagar Highway (National Highway 61).
The truck hit eight to ten vehicles on the highway, causing significant damage. Preliminary estimates suggest that the driver lost control of the truck, leading to the accident. The injured have been admitted to a private hospital in Ale Phata. Ale Phata police reached the spot, and locals protested on the highway. There is a fear among villagers that the number of deaths and injuries may increase.
Angry villagers have started a protest on the Kalyan-Ahmednagar Highway, demanding a bypass as the current highway passing through Gulunchwadi village is causing frequent accidents. The villagers are sitting on the streets, warning that the agitation will continue until the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) is held accountable for the deaths. The highway was blocked for more than two hours, causing long queues of vehicles in both directions.
As soon as information about the accident was received, a police team, along with Assistant Police Inspector Sunil Badgujar, reached the spot. While discussing the issue with the police, the villagers demanded that NHAI officials be called to the scene to discuss the matter. They insisted that despite repeated demands for a bypass, the road passing through Gulunchwadi village continues to cause frequent accidents, endangering the villagers. The villagers declared that they would not back down until the NHAI was held responsible for the fatalities.
