Pimpri, 9th September 2023: Pimpri-Chinchwad is currently under a strict lockdown today in a show of solidarity with Maratha protesters following a lathi charge incident in Jalna district. Businesses across the city voluntarily closed their doors, and many educational institutions suspended classes.

The Maratha Kranti Morcha and Sakal Maratha Samaj jointly organized this shutdown to condemn the state government’s use of force against the Maratha community’s demonstrations in Jalna district. Citizens of Pimpri-Chinchwad actively participated in the morning session of this city-wide protest.

From the early hours of the day, shops in Nigdi, Akurdi, Pimpri, Chinchwad, Bhosari, Sangvi, Pimple Gurav, and Pimple Saudagar remained closed in a display of unity. Additionally, numerous companies, factories, government offices, schools, and colleges also halted their operations. Some educational institutions even postponed scheduled exams for the day. It’s essential to note that essential services are exempt from the shutdown.

The day began with a gathering at the statue of Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj in Pimpri Gaon, followed by a peaceful foot march to Pimpri Chowk. A protest event is ongoing at this location until 5 pm.

Significantly, a large number of women, including members of the Muslim community, joined the march. The procession entered Pimpri peacefully, with a substantial police presence ensuring order and security at Pimpri Chowk, where the protest is concentrated.
