Pune Student’s Attempt to Steal Petrol Sparks Fire, 200 Rescued
Vadgaonsheri, 8th July 2025: A 20-year-old BBA student was arrested after his attempt to siphon petrol from a motorcycle led to a fire at the entrance of a commercial complex in Vadgaonsheri, endangering the lives of around 200 people who were inside the building at the time.
The incident occurred around 1 am on Monday at Shrushti Complex, where a religious gathering was being held on the third floor. Most of the attendees were asleep when thick smoke and flames suddenly filled the premises. Fortunately, the Pune fire brigade responded swiftly and evacuated everyone safely. No injuries were reported.
According to Chandannagar Police, the accused—who lives in Sanjay Park, Viman Nagar—was on his way home after visiting a friend when his scooter ran out of petrol. He stopped near the building and noticed several two-wheelers parked at the entrance.
“Instead of seeking help, he decided to steal fuel from one of the parked bikes,” said Senior Police Inspector Seema Dhakane. “He managed to access the fuel line and started siphoning petrol, but spilled some during the process. Since the area was dark, he used a lighter to check, which immediately ignited the fuel vapour.”
The fire spread rapidly, engulfing six motorcycles and reaching the entrance area of the building. Some plastic and wooden materials placed near the windows also caught fire.
Four fire engines rushed to the scene as residents trapped inside made desperate calls for help. “The smoke was so dense it blocked visibility and access,” said Fire Station Officer Vijay Bhilare. “We had to break window panes and use ropes and ladders to bring people down. Others were guided to safety through the staircase.”
Firefighters Nitin Temgire and Sanjay Jadhav led the operation, working quickly to contain the flames and prevent further damage. The fire was brought under control after an intense battle lasting nearly an hour.
The student was arrested later on Monday for his reckless actions, which police said could have had far more tragic consequences.
