Pimpri, 11th September 2023 – Suraj Mundhe, hailing from Pimpri Chinchwad, has achieved a significant milestone by successfully qualifying for the rigorous ‘Paris-Brest-Paris 2023’ cycling competition.

Widely recognized as one of the toughest cycling events globally, this year’s edition saw participation from approximately 290 cyclists from India. Mundhe earned his place in ‘Paris-Brest-Paris 2023’ after demonstrating his skills and determination in the pre-qualification and qualifying rounds.

Mundhe achieved his dream of becoming a cyclist by completing the 1219 km race in his first attempt, clocking in at 90 hours, 03 minutes, and 50 seconds. Throughout the competition, he confronted a range of challenges, including mountains, valleys, gorges, constant elevation changes, and extreme weather conditions such as cold, heat, wind, and rain. He also demonstrated discipline in managing his diet and sleep.

Every four years, the Audax Club Parisian in France hosts ‘Paris-Brest-Paris 2023,’ a world-class extreme cycling race covering 1200 km. Drawing participants from across the globe, this competition sees around 8000 contestants. The ‘Paris-Brest-Paris 2023’ race presents three challenging divisions, requiring cyclists to complete the demanding course in either 80, 84, or 90 hours.

To secure eligibility for ‘Paris-Brest-Paris 2023,’ cyclists must conquer a series of challenging events spanning distances of 1200, 1000, 600, 400, 300, and 200 km in India one year prior. In addition to these qualifying races, athletes must maintain rigorous training regimens, preparing themselves to confront an array of adversities including scorching heat, gusty winds, drenching rain, sweltering temperatures, frigid cold, and unpredictable fluctuations, all while carefully managing their diet and sleep patterns.

Mundhe credits his success to the invaluable support of his mentor, Ashish Joshi, who selflessly trained, guided, and motivated him throughout his journey. He also acknowledges the pivotal role played by his wife, Swati, and sons, Swaraj and Rajat, who provided spontaneous assistance in various ways, propelling him towards the finish line.

Additionally, he expresses gratitude to his cycling friends who extended their helping hand along the way.
