Pune: Surge In Eye Infections Across Maharashtra State Raises Concerns

Pune, 11th August 2023: An alarming rise in eye infections has been witnessed in various parts of the Maharashtra state since the onset of July. The reported cases have now reached a staggering count of 357,000 patients as of August 9. Notably, this marks an alarming increase of around 150,000 cases within just a week.

In the recent days, the incidence of eye infections has been rapidly escalating across the state. This concerning trend first emerged at the beginning of July and has since shown an unrelenting surge. The number of reported cases in the state stood at 187,000 on August 3, and it has surged to a staggering 357,000 by August 9. Children appear to be disproportionately affected among the patients, as highlighted by Dr. Pratap Singh Saranikar, Joint Director of Health Services.

Among the districts, Buldhana has reported the highest number of cases, with 44,398 patients suffering from eye problems. Pune follows closely with 28,042 cases, while Jalgaon, Nanded, and Chandrapur report 22,417, 18,196, and 15,348 cases respectively. In Pune Municipal Corporation limits, 6,720 patients have been identified, and in Pimpri-Chinchwad Municipal Corporation limits, 6,010 patients have been reported. Mumbai has reported 2,862 cases.

The surge in eye infections is a cause for concern, necessitating immediate attention and effective preventive measures to curb its spread. Health authorities are actively engaged in addressing the situation and raising public awareness about eye health and hygiene practices.
