Pune, 2nd May 2025: In a significant development in the Tanisha Bhise death case, the Maharashtra Government has announced financial assistance of Rs 24 lakh from the Chief Minister’s Medical Assistance Fund for the treatment of Bhise’s newborn twin daughters. Of this amount, Rs 10 lakh and Rs 14 lakh have been allocated through cheques to Surya Hospital for the respective care of each child, following their admission for medical treatment after their mother’s death.

The case has drawn widespread attention after allegations surfaced that Tanisha Bhise, a 37-year-old pregnant woman, died due to delayed treatment at Pune’s Deenanath Mangeshkar Hospital. According to her family, the hospital demanded a deposit of Rs 10 lakh before commencing treatment, which the family was unable to provide immediately. This delay, they allege, led to a deterioration in Bhise’s condition and ultimately her death two days after delivering twins at Surya Hospital on March 29.

Following public outrage and mounting criticism on social media over the hospital’s deposit policy, the Maharashtra government initiated an inquiry. A revised report by a committee from Sassoon General Hospital and BJ Medical College concluded that Dr. Sushrut Ghaisas, the attending gynaecologist at Deenanath Mangeshkar Hospital, was responsible for medical negligence and insensitivity by failing to admit Bhise on time despite her critical condition. The report highlighted that Bhise was made to wait over five hours without receiving the necessary emergency treatment, a delay that proved fatal.

Based on these findings, Pune police have registered an FIR against Dr. Ghaisas under Section 106(1) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, about death caused by negligence not amounting to culpable homicide. The investigation is ongoing, and authorities have indicated that further action will be taken as per legal procedures.

The incident has sparked a broader debate on the ethics of hospital deposit policies and the accessibility of emergency medical care. Medical experts have called for urgent reforms in hospital protocols to prevent similar tragedies in the future. The government has also signalled its intent to take strict action in this case, underscoring the need for accountability in the healthcare system.

Meanwhile, Bhise’s family continues to care for the surviving twins, with relatives stepping in to provide support as the case unfolds in both legal and public forums.
