Pune: Indrayani River Pollution Crisis Deepens Despite Repeated Assurances

Pimpri-Chinchwad, 2nd May 2025: The Indrayani River in Pimpri-Chinchwad has once again been seen covered in froth, raising serious concerns among locals and the Warkari community. The recurring pollution has led devotees and residents to question when this crisis will finally be resolved. Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis and Deputy Chief Minister Eknath Shinde had previously promised action to tackle the pollution of the Indrayani, but people in Alandi are now asking whether these assurances have amounted to anything.
Just a few days ago, Chief Minister Fadnavis reiterated his commitment to addressing the issue during a visit to Alandi, acknowledging that river pollution is a serious problem and assuring that efforts are underway, though it will take time to make the river pollution-free. Despite these promises, the reality is that the Indrayani continues to foam at least once every month, resembling a snow-fed river from icy regions.
The polluted state of the river poses a health risk not only to the Warkaris but also to the residents of Alandi. The Alandi temple authorities have brought the issue to the forefront, emphasising the urgent need for a pollution-free Indrayani. Every year, lakhs of Warkaris arrive in Alandi for the Ashadhi Wari pilgrimage and bathe in the river, which is considered sacred. However, the current situation is such that the water can no longer be called pure.
