Pimpri, 6th October 2022: While the workers of Tata Motors Company’s car division (car plant) were already deeply resentful as the wage hike agreement was stalled, now the Diwali bonus was not announced within the stipulated time. As a result, the workers boycotted the company’s Dussehra-Khandenavami mass worship. With this, the discontent among the workers has come to the fore again.

On May 3, 2022, Tata Motors workers reached an agreement on a wage hike with management. From the beginning, the agreement was held every three years. From this year, it was changed that it will happen every four years which was not acceptable to the workers. But still, the agreement was accepted despite the opposition of the workers.

The wage increase agreement of other departments was attained, but the agreement of the car department was not reached in that way. It was stopped for a long time. Due to this, there is dissatisfaction among the workers in this department.

The company changed the breakfast time of the workers and reduced it. Around 2,000 workers expressed their displeasure by boycotting tea, breakfast and food. While this incident was still fresh, the second issue appeared on Khandenavami day.

This time the reason for the displeasure was the bonus. As the bonus was not announced even till Dussehra, the resentment among the workers flared up anew. As per company tradition, workers, office bearers and management officials go to each department and worship together. However, that was not the case this year.

Due to displeasure, the labour union called for a boycott of the Pooja with the company management. Accordingly, the workers performed personal Pooja at their respective places. However, the day-long worship programs held jointly in various parts of the company could not take place at this time.

The trade union has placed a condition before the management that the bonus should not be discussed unless there is an agreement on the wage increase of the car department.

The majority of the labour leaders say that the issue of salary increment agreements and bonuses should not be linked with each other and two groups have fallen out of it. There is a feeling among the workers that the factionalism among the labour leaders is being taken advantage of by the management and it is causing them loss.
