Pune, 19th May 2025: Seventeen-year-old Saesha Goyal, a Class XII student of St. Mary’s School, Pune, has made the city and the nation proud by emerging as the runner-up at the prestigious International Public Speaking Contest (IPSC) held in London, United Kingdom, from May 12 to 16.

Representing India among 47 national champions from around the world, Saesha’s achievement stands out in a contest where over 100,000 students initially compete in their respective countries.

Organised by the English-Speaking Union, the IPSC is one of the most respected public speaking competitions globally. Finalists from participating countries are selected after rigorous national-level rounds, and only the most articulate, creative, and confident speakers make it to the international stage.

Weaving India’s Story Through Art
During the week-long event, Saesha impressed participants and judges alike with a creative country presentation, using traditional Indian fabrics, embroidery, and weaves to represent the cultural unity and diversity of India.

“Saesha’s display was not just a visual delight—it was a thoughtful representation of how India is stitched together by its artisans,” said Caroline Diane Ross, Principal of St. Mary’s School. “She truly captured the soul of India through art and oratory.”

Excellence in Oratory
The competition included both prepared speeches and impromptu speaking, designed to test a participant’s composure, clarity, and critical thinking. In the semi-final, Saesha spoke on Mahatma Gandhi’s quote, “Unity, to be real, must withstand the severest strain without breaking.” Her delivery resonated deeply with the audience and judges, securing her place among the top six finalists.

The grand finale was held at the historic Royal Institution in London on May 16, where Saesha addressed the audience on the Shakespearean theme, “We know what we are, but not what we may be.” Diplomats, ambassadors, and delegates from across the world were in attendance and responded with resounding applause to her powerful words.

“Her eloquence, poise, and maturity moved everyone in the room. To see her stand shoulder to shoulder with the world’s best young speakers was a proud moment for all of us,” Ross added.

A Moment of National Pride
After the event, Nidhi Choudhary from the Indian High Commission in London met Saesha to congratulate her personally on her outstanding achievement.
