Pune: Tensions in Paud Village After Idol Desecration at Nageshwar Temple

Paud, 3rd May 2025: Tensions gripped Paud village in Mulshi taluka on Friday evening following an incident of idol desecration at the local Nageshwar Temple, sparking public outrage and prompting heightened police deployment in the area.

According to a complaint filed by local resident Shivaji Maruti Waghavale (34), a 19-year-old man identified as Chand Naushad Shaikh allegedly entered the temple premises, locked the gates from inside, and desecrated the idol of Goddess Annapurna by forcefully toppling it.

The complaint further states that the accused’s father, Naushad Shadab Shaikh (44), allegedly made provocative remarks during the incident, saying, “You Hindus can’t do anything to us,” in the presence of bystanders.

Police Presence Intensified, Case Registered
In response to the sensitive nature of the incident, a heavy police force has been deployed around both the Nageshwar Temple and a nearby mosque to prevent any escalation of communal tensions. The investigation is being conducted by Assistant Police Inspector Balaji Kamble, under the supervision of Police Inspector Santosh Girigosavi, while the case has been officially registered by Inspector Ghule.

CCTV footage of the alleged act has gone viral on social media, further intensifying public sentiment. A public protest was also taken out.

Appeal for Calm Amid Viral Footage
Senior Police Inspector Gosavi has appealed to the public to remain calm and avoid sharing unverified information on social media. He warned that strict action will be taken against individuals found spreading rumors or attempting to incite unrest.

As of now, the situation in Paud village remains under control, with law enforcement keeping a close watch on local developments.
