Pune, 3rd May 2025: In a significant move, the Maharashtra School Education Department has approved the adjustment of special educators working under municipal corporations to vacant and suitable centers within the same taluka or district. While these educators will continue to serve at their current locations, the move formalizes their deployment, resolving a long-standing administrative issue.

A government resolution (GR) to this effect was recently issued, in line with Supreme Court directives that called for the regularization of contract-based special educators. The state government has since approved the reservation of 4,860 posts—one for each block-level center under the Zilla Parishads—for permanent appointments.

Regularization of 2,984 Contractual Special Educators
Under schemes like Samagra Shiksha’s Inclusive Education initiative, the Integrated Education for Disabled Children (IEDC), and other inclusive programs, around 2,984 special educators are currently working on a contractual basis across Maharashtra. The process of regularizing these educators is underway following thorough eligibility verifications.

However, challenges emerged for those deployed at city resource centers under municipal corporations. Since the reserved posts were at the Zilla Parishad level, the formal adjustment of municipal educators was delayed, causing administrative hurdles.

Temporary Deployment with Continued Functional Oversight
To address this, the department clarified that while the educators will now be officially absorbed under district-level posts, they will remain functionally deployed at their current municipal centers. They will continue reporting to municipal supervisors, with day-to-day work coordinated by local center heads.

The Education Department has instructed all Divisional and District Education Directors to implement this deployment structure without delay.

Call for Creation of Urban Posts
Despite this being a welcome move, officials acknowledge it as a temporary solution. The Urban Development Department has been urged to create dedicated posts for special educators in urban municipal corporations. This would prevent overburdening the system and avoid the risk of these educators being marked as surplus in the future.
