Pune, 10th January 2025: The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has forecasted a gradual rise in minimum temperatures across Pune and western Maharashtra during the Makar Sankranti festivities, with the mercury expected to climb above normal levels by mid-January. On Thursday, the temperature dipped to 10.9°C in Shivajinagar, signaling a drop in the region’s winter chill.

IMD data showed that Lohgaon recorded a minimum temperature of 13.6°C, while other regions in western Maharashtra saw varying temperatures. Kolhapur registered 16.2°C, and Mahabaleshwar recorded a minimum temperature of 11.8°C.

According to the IMD’s forecast, Pune is expected to experience a steady rise in minimum temperatures starting from January 12. “We anticipate a gradual increase in temperatures, reaching 14-15°C by January 12 and 13, and further rising to 16°C by January 14-15,” the IMD’s weather report stated. This rise is expected to push temperatures above normal levels, coinciding with the Makar Sankranti celebrations.

The coastal regions of Maharashtra, including Mumbai, are experiencing warmer nights. On Thursday, Mumbai recorded a minimum of 21.8°C, while other coastal towns like Alibaug and Ratnagiri reported temperatures of 15.8°C and 20.6°C, respectively.

In contrast, Vidarbha region has continued to experience cooler temperatures. Nagpur recorded the state’s lowest minimum at 8.2°C, while Amravati stood at 10.1°C.

The IMD also indicated that the rise in minimum temperatures across Maharashtra is expected to be around 2-3°C over the next two days. While temperatures in neighbouring Gujarat may initially rise, they are forecast to gradually fall by 2-3°C thereafter.

In terms of precipitation, the IMD has forecast light to moderate rainfall, accompanied by thunderstorms and lightning, across parts of south peninsular India. However, Maharashtra is expected to maintain mostly clear skies with some haze in the morning hours.

As the state prepares for the Makar Sankranti festival, residents can expect more mild and above-normal temperatures, bringing a welcome shift from the colder conditions of early January.
