Pune, May 31, 2020: Pune city and district are likely to get rain from June 1 to 4 owing to the influence of cyclonic conditions over the Arabian Sea. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) Pune has warned the city and the district to be braced for intense rains, gusty winds and thundering winds until June 4.

In a statement released in this regard, Anupam Kashyapi, Head of Weather, IMD Pune has mentioned, “Pune city/district is very likely to get moderate rain on June 1,2 and 4 June, and moderate to heavy rain on June 3 (Wednesday). Moderate rain refers to the rainfall which measures between 15.6 to 64.4mm/day, and heavy rain is from 64.5 to 115.5mm/day.”

The rainfall would be a result of the cyclonic circulation over the southeast Arabian Sea off Kerala coast, due to which a low-pressure area has formed over the southeast and adjoining east-central Arabian Sea and Lakshadweep area.

“It is very likely to concentrate into a depression over east-central and the adjoining southeast Arabian Sea during the next 24 hours, and likely to intensify further into a cyclonic storm during the subsequent 24 hours. It is very likely to move nearly northwards and reach near north Maharashtra and Gujarat coasts by June 3,” the statement by IMD read.

As an impact of this, the IMD Pune has stated that moderate to one-day heavy rain may inundate low lying areas in the city and district. “Spells of intense rainfall, momentarily gusty wind at around 40 kmph, and associated thunderous activity, lightning might lead to breaking of tree branches, traffic congestion and other problems. So preparedness is very important along with proper drainage,” Kashyapi said in the statement.

From June 5 onward, the rainfall activity will reduce slowly. Meanwhile, the IMD scientific team has reiterated that since the conditions are very likely to become favourable from June 1, as declared earlier, the onset of monsoon in Kerala is very likely around Monday, June 1.
